Default Tetherbridge

Hey All,

I am on the Bell Network with a HSPA 9780 and a grandfathered unlimited data plan, but that does not include tethering. I was looking at tethering options, and I see that the tetherbridge app seems to hide the fact you are tethering to a laptop and it makes it appear just as extra data on your phone. Does anyone here use this app, and does it work?

Thanks in advance!

I think you're thinking of "Tether", as in the app formerly known as "Tetherberry". I've used it, and have an unlimited data plan as you do, but have run into periodic issues using this application.

Executive summary: Use with caution. Monitor your usage and make sure you call Bell CS before the end of your billing cycle if you're not sure of the charges you're seeing.

Agreed about Tether. (ssshhh, though.... they advertise very heavily here...)

The big issue is with Bell and their APNs. The Tether people have managed to on a number of occasions, release their products with default Bell APNs that charge mucho $$ to the customer. Their customer support response is "so what, it's just a few whining Bell customers with multi-thousand dollar wireless data charges" or words to that effect. This is well documented here. Thankfully I wasn't stung myself, but it was two near misses!

You're still going to run into issues with that TetherBridge product, but they seem to be much more upfront (literally, it's on their front page) about dealing with carriers and their respective APNs and setup.

Default Tethering

Doesn't the DM have Tethering now to set up your phone as a modem?

Isn't Data just Data. Using a BB as a modem doesn't matter, a computer will obviously transfer data a lot quicker and more.

I won a free copy of TetherBerry here a year or so ago and tried it out. Great stuff until I got my Bell bill of $1700.00 because of the data transfer and all, and thats with a so called "Unlimited Data Plan."

After speaking with them, and I found if you keep civil and act like you didn't know what was happening, they took it down to $150 for some other charges.

I know I should have gone for the whole amount, but when I opened that bill it took me a minute or two to get my pulse back. The big utilities have no problem dragging things out if you want to take a "Legal Action " route, they eat little guys like me for coffee breaks.

Needless to say I have not tried it out again, with TetherBerry or on DM, although it seems to be a great feature.

Maybe it wont be long until there is enough pressure/competition to really open it up to "Unlimited"

BB Storm 9530
My first Smart Phone, got it when it came out. Set up the way I want it and it's still working Great for me.
Currently 5.0.0.419
But with the wonderful info and confidence given me from the forums here, playing around with OS' no problem

I've tried both "Tether" (trial in Sept-Oct 2010) and Tetherbridge - now using Tetherbridge exclusively with great success since Nov 2010. So far I've had no issues with overcharges, used up to about 460mb in a month at $0. I have a Bold 9700 on Bell Mobility with "zUnl Email & Internet BBerry 30" on my Bell plan - grandfathered for 2 years now. I think as long as you don't modify the default APN on your device and don't go completely nuts and use over 2gb bandwidth in a month then you should be fine (I think default APN is "pda.bell.ca" or something like that).
