Bell Mobility / Tether Use Showing up as Pay-per-use Again
Oldie but goodie thread on same topic:
Tether usage now showing up as Pay Per Use ($6/Meg) »
...but, seeing as this *is* the Bell Mobility forum us 3G BB users of Bell should definitely know about this and this post HAS TO BE LEFT HERE (please, Mods!) FYI, I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan which does *not* include tethering.
Old Story and definitely a case of caveat emptor. I recently returned from 2 separate road trips: one to Vancouver; and the other to Toronto. I regularly check my unbilled usage online and it's a good thing because there were 430 MB of "Mobile Browser Pay-per-Use" data on my unbilled (ie: yet to be billed) statement. Do the math. $6/MB over-age x 430 MB is over;-)e is $2580.00! And the CAN $ is at par, btw. ;-)
The good news is that I called Bell right away and a very helpful CS guy took it off my bill last Friday night after consulting with his supervisor. The bad news is that the latest version of Tether is back to its (documented) trick of not doing a good job of hiding tethered usage.
And that *is* the purpose of Tether. Why else would one use this app, when RIM's own Desktop Manager has the same functionality and a better GUI to boot? I paid my own $60 for this app about a year ago, and this is the second time that my Bell Mobility BlackBerry 9700 has been caught on the Bell radar. The last time was due to faulty APN settings (which Tether.com admitted) were built into the software, this time who knows?
I am uninstalling this software before I have another myocardial infarction. It ain't worth it (both figuratively and literally) despite their rather prominent position as a sponsor on this site.
