Default Bell and GPS with Third Party Applications

Back a couple years ago when I had a Curve 8330 on Bell, the GPS worked great with Google Maps.

Then about a year ago I got the Storm, and GPS would no longer work with Google Maps. All the reading I did lead me to believe that Bell was blocking the port used by GPS, as that port was reserved for something else.

So I accepted that and forgot about it.

Until last night, I was just mucking around with the phone, and found that GPS with Google Maps was now working! It locates me within 3 metres!

Anyone else notice this? Did Bell make a change? I haven't upgrade Google Maps, it is version 4.0.2 My OS is .591

I've heard mixed results on this.

I'm running .590 and Google Maps 4.2 and still only get within 2400 Meters, which is not accurate.

It might be time to upgrade my OS and see if somehow it's related, but I'm thinking its somehow related to carrier location, which doesn't really seem to make sense, but I know in NB the few people that have tried have not been able to get this to work.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I used to have trouble too, until I upgraded my S1 to 591 ( I think). I upgraded to an S2 and it is working too.

From what I've read (and believed?) is that the problem was actually googles fault and was complication with Assisted GPS.

Almost immediately google released a new version which fixed it for Verizon but there was no such luck for us. There was talk that Telus was fixed some time ago before us but unfortunately some people seem to think that finding your phone on a map period is GPS so I can't be sure.

The most recent update to google maps has fixed the GPS for Bell Storm users. This may be only those on OS5 because the 4 users with Storms on Bell that I know of are all running bleeding edge hybrids or at the very least 591.

It was a great day as my single most massive compliant with the storm since release has been the total lack of GPS on GMaps... for some time I even used the Bing app because it worked.... sigh.
