Bell claims I used 70MB of data in one day
Hi -
I have a corporate Blackberry, which I also use for limited personal use (text, email). There are 2 personal apps that I use occasionally are Score Mobile and Ubertwitter. I received my bill today and my account was billed for over $800 due to the fact that they claim I used 70mb in one day. I have never gone over the 30mb monthly imit or exceeded 1mb a day in usage. On this particular day, December 25th I have no recollection of even using my Blackberry except for one text. Because of the day, I have pretty good recollection of my activities. Is it possible one of these apps could have been accidently left one and used this much data?
I have monitored my use carfully and my job is at stake. Any advice in dealing with Bell? They are currently doing a data investigation.
Thanks. - 01-28-2010, 02:05 PM #3
its not likely that the apps used this much data in one day. I have my score mobile app running continuously all month with updates every few minutes during games and haven't been able to use more that 100mb in a month, combined with all my other usage.
Did you consider the possibility that someone got a hold of your phone and was playing arounfd with it. Maybe streaming video? - 01-28-2010, 02:35 PM

Because it was Christmas, my finacee made me leave my Blackberry at home all day and no one else would have had access to it.
They have accused me of tethering, but I can gurantee that I did not do that.
Feel quite helpless at this point....thanks for the replies. - 01-28-2010, 03:05 PM #6
I don't trust bell. Once upon a time when I had my home phone with them, I received my bill at the end of the month claiming that I made a 3 hour long call to Germany which costed about $300 bucks. I never made that call as I don't even know anyone in Germany. After a lot of frustrating customer service calls, I eventually had to pay fort the call I didn't make. Since then I switched to rogers home phone and never had a problem like that since.
I just wish these companies had some accountability when it comes to disputed charges. It sucks that all we get is that "its logged to your account and you have to pay it"

I did get this response....
The request has now been passed on to the next level; it should take 2-3 weeks for processing.
In response to the tethering accusation; when a user tethers it appears to us as “1X Data” if there was tethering. In your usage “RIM Data” which means the data was used on the device. We have requested through internal channels on how to read the usage better. We sincerely apologize for the lack of appropriate customer relations in the instance, and hopefully we can get resolved shortly.
If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Have a great day.

I don't know if this was just an automated response or if someone actually typed it out, but from my impression it appears that they are willing to look into it and find out what happened.
Not quite the "its on your log, so pay up" that was mentioned. Hope you can get it cleared up. - 01-29-2010, 09:08 AM #9
So like you're on a limited data plan up there and it's how many mb is that? It takes no time to do 1mb and it takes 1,000mb to make 1gb.

this happened to me
only difference was i received a call from Bell regarding going over limit... and my bill would have been 950 bucks.. i freaked.
realized that i was 'tethering' (used my data from by phone for internet access on my laptop) and didn't know that it cost 8$/MB.... so, the agent kindly took that 950 off my bill and gave me a warning. thank god!
call the agent and find out if they can take it off. - 02-02-2010, 01:03 PM

And the latest.....
Your issue has been escalated to Research In Motion (RIM) the manufacturer of the BlackBerry. Please have the BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) admin follow this link www.blackberry.com/go/nalogs and upload the BES logs for the contested times mentioned. Service Assurance will then investigate with RIM. The RIM ticket number is ********
If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Have a great day.
Thank you for choosing Bell Mobility
I tried everything to get it removed but because they viewed a trend of increased usage they need to investigate. Here is my usage for the month in MB: .145, 1.224, 0.335, 0.169, 0.177, 71.2979, 0.024, 0.794, 0.9961, 0.6250, 1.05, 1.688, 0.349Last edited by indian09; 02-02-2010 at 01:24 PM.

A trend of increased usage? That doesn't look like a trend to me, it looks like consistently low usage, with a a 100 fold increase for one day, which seems very strange. Hopefully when they analyze whatever log files they're asking for it will provide some answers.

Does that mean your data use was on the device and not for tethering? I think it's pretty hard to use that much data in one day without tethering. Perhaps this is what they realize and is why they are investigating and not just trying to make you pay. I use data a fair amount and usually don't even use that much in a month. - 02-08-2010, 10:35 PM #13
If you stream radio, go on youtube, or get some files over ftp 70mb is easily achievable in a day.A trend of increased usage? That doesn't look like a trend to me, it looks like consistently low usage, with a a 100 fold increase for one day, which seems very strange. Hopefully when they analyze whatever log files they're asking for it will provide some answers.
