They might. If you ship unsold stock valued in your books at zero and ship other stock at $500 your ASP will be what? I'm some at zero. Some at 500.

Remember when the writedowns happened they were counting shipped as if they were sold. Many of those were returned. We don't know how they actually booked the writedowns. Could've been zero for billion of prev value. In any event those phones have gradually been sold and since they were already written down zero might be OK and anything over zero is gravey.

But it probably effects the ASP

Do we have half at zero and half at 420.


They will never tell.

Chen is managing these numbers to allow each quarter to have a little more profit

My previous posts on this topic were about what hardware is there to sell. Passport will not be high volume. Classic barely out yet. Bb7 phones no longer being made and deeply discounted first gen bb10 phones.

Sort of conflicting. Press release says BB10, Chen corrected in CC that they were Passports and Classics. Not a lot of Z3s or Z30s shipping - wonder how many are left in the channels.

Don't count the struggling smartphone maker out yet. BlackBerry CEO John Chen's housecleaning is starting to yield benefits. The next step: stabilizing its collapsing revenue.

You can't keep BlackBerry down.

The struggling smartphone manufacturer posted a surprise profit for the second quarter in a row, eking out gains thanks to a massive cost-cutting effort and an adjustment to the value of its investment in a broad patent portfolio. For its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended Feb. 28, BlackBerry posted earnings excluding certain items of 4 cents a share, compared with Wall Street's forecast of a loss of 4 cents a share.

BlackBerry shares rose 3.2 percent to $9.60 in premarket trading Friday.

The Canadian company, a once dominant phone maker that has fallen far from its peak, is in the midst of a transformation under CEO John Chen. While its core BlackBerry business continues to be a focus, Chen is streamlining the business and shifting its resources into the more profitable software and services realm. At the same time, he is more narrowly targeting big business customers as the company gets away from its earlier attempts to be a mass-market brand.

"Our financial viability is no longer in question," Chen said in an earnings conference call, saying he is halfway through his turnaround efforts.

The company earlier this month said it plans to bring some of BlackBerry's key elements -- including its security services and "BlackBerry Hub" interface -- to the iPhone and Android smartphones. It also announced a partnership to team with Google to support Android for Work and is working closer with Samsung's Knox security feature.

That's not to say BlackBerry has given up on the smartphone business. At the Mobile World Congress trade show earlier this month, the company unveiled two upcoming smartphones: an affordable all-touchscreen device called the BlackBerry Leap, and a mysterious smartphone with a curved edges like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and a slide-out keyboard.

BlackBerry Reports $28 Million Profit in 4th Quarter

OTTAWA — Despite a continued drop in revenue, the ailing smartphone maker BlackBerry on Friday reported a $28 million profit during its fourth quarter thanks to a patent sale and tax recovery. The company lost $304 million on revenue of $3.3 billion for the entire year.

John S. Chen, the company’s executive chairman and president, had not promised much for the quarter. In a statement, he mostly addressed the company’s future.

”Our focus this past year was on getting our financial house in order while creating a multiyear growth strategy and investing in our product portfolio,” Mr. Chen said. “We now have a very good handle on our margins, and our product road maps have been well received.”

Under Mr. Chen, BlackBerry has drastically slimmed its operations and carefully limited production of phones, even new models, to avoid the financial surprises of the past caused by large inventory write downs.

But the earnings announcement showed how much smaller the company has become. Fourth-quarter revenue was $660 million, down from $793 million in the previous quarter. Analysts had expected revenue of about $792 million.

And BlackBerry’s revenue for the just-completed fiscal year is just under half of what it posted a year ago. Mr. Chen did significantly cut the company’s annual loss to $304 million, from $5.9 billion.

The company lost $106 million on operations during its last quarter. That was offset by $105 in investment gains, mainly from a patent sale, and a $29 million income tax recovery.

Despite introducing two major new phones at the end of last year, BlackBerry sold just 1.3 million phones at wholesale. Sales to consumers and businesses, including previously shipped stock were 1.6 million. Both figures are very small by industry standards.

BlackBerry posted its lowest quarterly revenue in more than eight years on Friday, as the Canadian smartphone maker struggled to find new sources of revenue to offset dwindling sales of its handsets.

The group posted revenues of $660m in the final three months of its fiscal year, a drop of about a third compared with the same time last year and its lowest three-month sales figure since 2007.

Wall Street analysts had expected the company to report revenues of $782m, having already downgraded their expectations in the days leading up to the company’s earnings.

The company reported a small profit of $20m or 4 cents a share, in part because of cost cutting but also because lower sales of its unprofitable devices actually boosted margins.

“We now have a very good handle on our margins, and our product road maps have been well received,” said John Chen, chief executive. “The second half of our turnaround focuses on stabilisation of revenue with sustainable profitability and cash generation.”

Despite the high-profile launch of two phones — the Passport and the Classic — BlackBerry sold 1.6m handsets to consumers, approximately half the number it sold in the same period of last year. This was due, in part, to a delayed launch of the Classic, although it was still well shy of the 1.9m being pencilled in by the typical analyst.

Revenues from software were $67m, a number that Mr Chen needs to roughly double if he is to meet his target of generating $500m of annual revenues from this area by the end of February 2016.

Since coming out of retirement at the end of 2013 to try to revive BlackBerry, Mr Chen has launched five smartphones, stopped the company burning through cash and managed to turn a small quarterly profit. Yet the company has been unable to stop haemorrhaging revenues.

This month, Mr Chen acknowledged the difficulties but pleaded for more time. “Yes, we have revenue that is depleting . . . the road map will take a few years to gel, but we will make money out of it,” he said at the time.

In an effort to find a new source of growth, Mr Chen’s plan is to perform a tricky pivot away from relying on its unpopular phones and into selling software and services to companies.

BlackBerry has already introduced a suite of solutions designed to help businesses manage their employees’ handsets, even if they use Apple iPhones or Samsung Galaxys. One such product allows a user to be billed separately for private and business use of the same device. Another offers encryption and anti-eavesdropping services for governments and large corporations.

At its zenith in 2011, the Canadian-based smartphone maker booked revenues of $5.6bn in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, which runs until the end of February. However, since then its devices — which once accounted for one-in-five smartphone sales — have struggled to compete against Apple’s iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy.
