How the Internet of Things Will Upend Retirement - The Experts - WSJ

JOSEPH COUGHLIN: The Internet of Things, where all things around you, on you and, soon, in you, begin to talk, offers great potential to improve how well we will live in retirement and older age. These tech-enabled services will support many people who live alone in retirement, often at a distance from family. Just consider that more than 40% of women 65-years-old and older live alone. For those providing care to an older loved one, the services enabled by the Internet of Things will provide additional eyes, ears, and even a helping hand to stressed family caregivers.

Imagine a world where everything around you is “smart.” Everyday devices sense your movement, habits and changes in behavior. Your home will have two architectures: One, the physical design you see and experience every day, and the other a cyber, nearly invisible set of sensors and connected service providers that monitor, manage and motivate daily behaviors to support your well-being. Already today there are countless systems that glow, buzz or ring to remind you to take your medications. Once “dumb” devices that only kept food cold or made your morning coffee are now smart, helping ensure that you are eating and sleeping well. Your refrigerator will track your eating habits while your coffee-maker may signal a change in your sleep habits and morning routine. Connected to health-management call centers, family and friends, your toaster may tattle on your daily carb intake. Even today’s geek-chic wearable device will eventually be a conduit of physiological and behavioral information to your smartphone and beyond. While providing extraordinary benefits, the Internet of Things may also introduce new costs in older age.

Future expenses in retirement have generally been foreseeable. Housing and transportation are the big-ticket items, with health and long-term-care costs being wild cards. However, the Internet of Things will generate a whole new range of future and monthly costs that will soon be as routine as the one-time luxury of cable television. Even off-the-shelf basic monitoring services available today can easily become an additional $100 monthly out-of-pocket expense. Soon the price of new appliances will include a monthly service fee to enable their full range of functionality. For those who might say they will never pay for such “add-ons,” ask if they own a cellphone with a monthly cost, along with a digital service fee that enables the apps they recently bought from the cloud. The Internet of Things will create a new line-item of monthly costs in our retirement budgets. These will be expenses that are neither strictly health care nor communications, but an entirely new price of living well in older age.

Another unspoken cost is less about money and more about information and time. How will individuals or families identify the best fit of appliances, sensors and services to provide both convenience and care in retirement living? There is currently no nationally recognized objective “smart buyer” adviser for cyber-enabled aging. Who will provide the installation, training and maintenance of these services? Today’s call center services will not be acceptable to tomorrow’s user of smart-living technologies. While the Internet of Things promises amazing potential one device at a time, older adults and caregivers want integrated solutions, not products that create more work.

Finally, the Internet of Things is ultimately about communicating information—very personal information. Living in a “smart home” comes at the price of privacy. Users of the Internet of Things must determine that the intimate information they share will be protected by trusted organizations. Moreover, the services provided must produce an extraordinarily high value of convenience and care outweighing costs to retirement savings and privacy.

Tomorrow’s retirement living will be shaped by technology. While high-tech will provide incredible benefits, it will also bring new costs, both financial and social, that should be considered as a new part of retirement planning.

Know what the problem with all these insecure cars is. QNX may be secure but the crap that these auto makers are creating on top of it is not.

Possibly a good opportunity for BlackBerry to provide security consulting architecture and auditing services.

Time for BlackBerry to go on the offensive for these car companies present the opportunity and talk in terms of dollars and sense not to mention lawsuits.

I agree. Steal as many customers as you can for free first, lower the value of MobileIron and get them for cheap.

A buyout right now is still too much of a victory for MobileIron. Let them feel the crunch that BlackBerry investors have, because of their lies. I want Faucette to be standing there, scratching his head as BlackBerry picks up the pieces of his little precious.

With all do respect, I understand the sentiment.

Take the counter-feet. Surprise everybody and force them to do the maths and acknowledge clear and loud: "BlackBerry is the undisputed #1 for MDM/EMM, in large proportion". Priceless for the brand IMHO. Cost furthermore offset by revenues, either with M.I 'as is' (like the latest other acquisitions until they are fully integrated).

Technology licensing is a new and growing aspect of BlackBerry�s business. BlackBerry announced a long-term patent cross-licensing deal with Cisco Systems. The deal, one of the outgrowths of BlackBerry�s vaunted patent portfolio, will result in a license fee paid by Cisco to BlackBerry.

CEO John Chen also noted a second licensing deal during the quarter with a �major technology provider� that for contract reasons he was unable to name.

Wrestling Legend 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper Dies at 61

The professional wrestling legend known as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at his Hollywood, California, home, officials and World Wrestling Entertainment said. He was 61.

"I am shocked and beyond devastated," Schachter said. "He was an icon, a legend, an amazing man and a true friend." In 2006, the WWE announced that Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and would receive treatment.

Piper, whose real name is Roderick George Toombs, joined World Wrestling Entertainment in 1984; before that he wrestled in the NWA.

Piper was known for his on-air feud with Hulk Hogan, and the wrestling entertainment company said Piper began his career as "one of the most-hated villains ever to step between the ropes."

Piper and "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff took on Hogan and Mr. T in the first-ever WrestleMania. WWE calls the bout "one of the marquee main events in its history."

Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also named one of the WWE's "Top 50 Villains."

"Roddy Piper was one of the most entertaining, controversial and bombastic performers ever in WWE, beloved by millions of fans around the world," WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon said in a statement. "I extend my deepest condolences to his family."

Piper starred in the 1988 John Carpenter cult classic sci-fi film "They Live."

Carpenter said he was "devastated" by the news. "He was a great wrestler, a masterful entertainer and a good friend," Carpenter said in a post on Facebook.

Piper is survived by his wife, Kitty, and their four children.

Other wrestlers shared the condolences and fond memories on Twitter.

Freescale or Siemens or Samsung? QNX partners with Freescale quite a bit. But Siemens uses QNX in a lot of their offerings, and across industries. Samsung, well their BlackBerry partnership seems to be expanding. They may be seeing the advantages of dumping Tizen for QNX in everything that Samsung manufactures.

It was but in this context, I believe the "second licensing deal" refers to a general patent licensing or, perhaps, cross-licensing deal a la Cisco rather than a specific QNX licensing deal, as is the case with Intel.

Judging by the way the information is presented here, I would guess it is a cross-licensing deal. Pure speculation on my part, though...

Meanwhile, Intel is licensing our QNX platform for its next-generation connected car efforts. QNX is the most popular connected car platform today, with 60 million cars on the road today relying on QNX, said Chen.

Besides the Cisco and Intel deals, other wins from BlackBerry’s BTS Division (BlackBerry Technology Solutions) include the licensing of our Certicom encrypted certificates to manage 104 million smart power meters in the UK, and the licensing of Paratek antenna technology to ON Semiconductor.

And the other with another major technology provider whose name they would like to keep off the radar, I guess.

Number three, Certicom had won a deal to manage certificates for connected devices and we have began issuing certificates to secure 104 million smart meters in U.K. Number four, Paratek signed a new licensing agreement to provide ON Semi, I think ON Semi is in China, ON semi for the antenna tuning technology.
