Chen will get $1 million in salary, $2 million in bonus based on performance and $85 million (current value) in stock vested over five years. If he is terminated in the first year, without cause, then he'll get a $6 million termination payment.

Heins will get $14 million termination payment.

That is $85m at today's stock price over 5 years. If he screws up, maybe $0. If he performs and the stock returns back to half of what it use to be, maybe $850m. A fair compensate scheme.

Well don't forget they have to set the metrics for that. The CEO of GM was getting a bonus while GM was hemorrhaging money year after year! All because he hit the internal metric for his bonus.

I'm quite happy with that. The better he does, the more he makes. The worse he does, then he walks away with only a fraction of what he could have. Incentives to do better and improve. The other execs better shape up or he will ship them out. It would be in his best interest.

I worked for a company that paid managers bonuses for sales losses, yet didn't pay bonuses for gains. I asked the hr person who hired me about it, she replied "well we were expecting them to lose money anyway"

I quit, and they sold to a competitor one month later.

Of course you expect these guys to make big bucks. The part that I would like to know is more specifics on the performance based incentives. What goals must be met?

85M over 5 years for an interim CEO seems a bit excessive. I'm guessing they weren't attracting the good talent with lesser offers.

Well, I suppose at the very least that we have an answer to how long Chen might be an "interim" CEO. If he jumps ship 6 months into the gig, then he is missing out on a very big pay day.

But, if he turns things around and BlackBerry's share price recovers, then Chen is going to be taking home some serious, serious coin.

Not a bad deal. If Blackberry performs badly, he could still walk away with $30 mil (1/3 of current stock value). I don't think Blackberry will go to 0 over the next 5 years.
But on the other hand, if Blackberry can turn things around, Chen can turn his $88 mil to a billion dollars. A long shot but possible.

he came in to sell the company in pieces not to save it..I cannot believe people cannot understand that $1b cash infusion is just a band aid to buy a couple of months while this patsy find a way to divest the company
