During the first quarter, the Company recognized hardware revenue on approximately 1.6 million BlackBerry smartphones compared to approximately 1.3 million BlackBerry smartphones in the previous quarter.

During the first quarter, approximately 2.6 million BlackBerry smartphones were sold through to end customers, which included shipments made and recognized prior to the first quarter and which reduced the Company's inventory in channel.

At first sight that looks quite promising.

Much better numbers than I think any of us expected.

Looking at the revenue number per region is a little troubling, but it is a step in the right direction overall.

True the numbers are good, and with the upcoming BBM protect, BBM for Windows, expanded BBM money, BES 12, and new hardware BlackBerry has plenty of opportunes for growth. The thing that worries me in the long term is if BlackBerry will be able to make enough money from hardware to justify keeping that division operational? John Chen said that BlackBerry would need to sell 10 million phones a year for the company to be profitable and this quarter they sold through to customers 2.6 million units. So it seems that might be the case but will these numbers be able to grow, since they only recognized revenue on 1.6 million units?

BlackBerry recognized the revenue from sale of 1.6 million, but they sold though 2.6 million devices. This was dew to a change in accounting practices, as they work though these numbers it should start to balance out in the future they should be recognizing more of their sell through. This should end up being big improvement to their bottom line.
