FTR:
Ford taps BlackBerry talent to double its in-house mobile engineering team
Ford has made 400 new engineering hires, the company announced, and will create a new Research and Engineering Centre in Ottawa (yes, it’s a ‘centre’ because it’s Canadian). The majority of the hires come from BlackBerry, where they have extensive experience working with QNX, the operating systems that powers Ford’s SYNC 3, and is used by a large number of the world’s leading automakers in similar capacities.
The new hires more than double Ford’s existing team of engineers focused on mobility and connectivity, and essentially mean that Ford now has a larger group dedicated to this area than do many smartphone makers, as pointed out to me by Ford’s Global Director for Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering Chuck Gray.
So what does a focus on mobility and connectivity entail for this new cadre of Ford engineers, exactly? Well, autonomous vehicles are one aspect, but the more immediate concerns for the group will be working on specific elements of in-car connectivity, device-to-device communication and network technology that will eventually prove very useful in fielding the first generation of consumer self-driving cars.
“In order to have autonomy, the vehicle’s got to be connected, it’s just fundamental,” Gray explained. “The vehicle itself, whether there’s a driver or not, has to be communicating with the cloud for various reasons, so this group immediately is working on creating that connectivity spine or network upon which everything else can be built.”
“The majority [of hires from this announcement] are from BlackBerry,” he said, regarding the decision to place their new facility in Ottawa and the talent they’re drawing for the majority of this group of new employees. “Obviously they have deep skills, in embedded software, in mobile devices, in connectivity, and when you look at the subsets of products they work in – they work in RF, they work hardware, they work at the chip level, they work in operating systems, they have a renowned reputation for security and stability […] so it was a really good fit.”
Projects the group will focus on include in-car connectivity, as mentioned, as well as advanced driver assist features. The work of the group will also take place in additional engineering centers in Waterloo and Oakville in Canada, as well as North Carolina and Florida in the U.S. It’s also reasonable to expect the company’s investment in this area to grow over time, as it takes on an increasingly important role to automakers in general.
Gray says that the company set its sights on “really having full control over the software that shapes” much of a driver’s experience in the car, and sought out a talent pool that could support these ambitions, which led it to Canada’s automotive systems engineering hub in Ottawa, where BlackBerry’s QNX is based. Gray added that a focus on its own mobility engineering would help undergird revenue potential resulting from connected vehicles, as well as provide added potential for customers over the lifetime of their cars via convenience features like over-the-air software updates.
Data is the key for carmakers in the modern market, and making sure you have an internal organization that can effectively own in-car software and connectivity services will be key to keeping ahead in that race, especially as the industry moves towards autonomous cars and more free time for in-car activity.03-30-17 08:56 AMLike 4 - Ford Hires BlackBerry Employees to Work on Connected Cars | Fox Business

The new Innovation Centre plans to hire as many as 295 engineers, software developers and high-tech workers to help Ford design the next generation of autonomous cars.
The announcement, part of a larger $1-billion investment Ford is pouring into its Canadian facilities, was made on Thursday morning in Windsor. The federal and provincial government were on hand, promising to provide as much as $102.4 million towards Ford’s total investment.
It is expected that Ford will draw on the wealth of talent in networking, sensors and automobile software that is in the nation’s capital thanks to companies like Blackberry QNX, Huawei, Nokia and former technology industry titans like Nortel Networks.
BlackBerry QNX is the world’s leading developer of software for automobiles, supplying software for car computer systems to almost every major automotive brand on the market today. The company’s software, which powers everything from diagnostic systems and backup cameras to entertainment and navigation systems, is already installed in more than 60 million vehicles around the globe.
In December, BlackBerry QNX announced the opening of an autonomous drive research facility in Ottawa, a move that will lead to the company more than doubling its staff in the coming years at its Kanata offices.
The Kanata firm’s software runs everything from routine diagnostics and blind-spot detection systems to in-car entertainment networks.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on hand for the Windsor announcement, as was BlackBerry chief executive John Chen.
Chen said the company will spend as much as $100 million on staff at the Kanata facility, which will see up to 650 new employees added to QNX‘s Ottawa operations. He promised even more spending to support the self-driving car initiative across the company, but wouldn’t specify how much.
The company currently employs about 400 in Ottawa.03-30-17 09:56 AMLike 3 -

Ford Hires 400 BlackBerry Employees for Connected Cars Work
Ford Motor Co. agreed to hire 400 employees from BlackBerry Ltd. to help develop wireless technology at the automaker, deepening an ongoing partnership between the two companies involving in-car connectivity.
The shift doubles the number of connected-car engineers at Ford and will help the U.S. company build its own wireless products in-house, said BlackBerry spokeswoman Sarah McKinney. At the same time, it helps the Canadian tech company pare costs as it completes a shift to selling software instead of phones.
“The move enables us to focus all our resources on the new strategy,” McKinney said.
BlackBerry and Ford announced a formal partnership in October to work together on car-related technologies. The deal focuses on connected-car features, like being able to send software downloads to a vehicle remotely, but also left open the door for the two to collaborate on self-driving technology. BlackBerry’s QNX division is working to position itself as a key player in that field. None of the employees transferred to Ford came from QNX, the BlackBerry spokeswoman said.
Some of the Canadian employees involved in the move launched a class-action lawsuit against BlackBerry earlier this year, alleging the company didn’t provide them with proper severance as part of the transfer. BlackBerry said the lawsuit lacks merit and is contesting it. The employee transfer previously was reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The announcement comes the same day Ford said it received $154 million from federal and provincial governments to help support 800 jobs at the company’s engine plant in Windsor, Ontario.03-30-17 10:48 AMLike 4 -

Non-GAAP revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 was $297 million with GAAP revenue of $286 million. Approximately 80% of the fourth quarter Software & Services segment revenue (excluding IP licensing and professional services) was recurring. BlackBerry had over 3,500 enterprise customer orders in the quarter.
Non-GAAP operating income was $13 million, and non-GAAP earnings per share was $0.04.
GAAP net loss for the quarter was $47 million, or ($0.09) per basic share. GAAP operating loss was $57 million, which includes $28 million in amortization of acquired intangibles, $25 million in restructuring charges, a benefit of $16 million of fair value adjustment related to the debentures and other amounts as summarized in a table below.
Total cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments increased by $89 million to approximately $1.7 billion as of February 28, 2017. This reflects free cash flow of $16 million, which includes cash flow from operations of $19 million. Excluding $605 million in the face value of the Company's debt, the net cash balance at the end of the quarter was approximately $1.1 billion. There were no purchase orders with contract manufacturers at the end of the fourth quarter, compared to $35 million at the end of the third quarter and down from $162 million a year ago.
"I am pleased to report that our Q4 results came in at or above expectations in all major metrics," said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry. "In the quarter, we continued to grow our mix of software and services revenue across the company. In turn, this allowed us to expand our operating margin and report positive free cash flow. In addition, our balance sheet continues to strengthen and benefit from reduced capital requirements with our focus on software and licensing."
"In our areas of strategic focus, we are executing well and gaining traction," continued Chen. "In our enterprise business, we had one of our best-ever software billings quarters, driven by strength across regulated and non-regulated industries. Enhancing our position in public sector, we recently achieved FedRAMP certification for the U.S. government. In IOT appliances, we won new business and secured six new customer trials for Radar. We demonstrated our autonomous driving technology platform at CES 2017. In mobile software licensing, we signed our third major agreement, and we now have global coverage. We are entering the next phase in sub-licensing our secure software to a variety of new mobile endpoints. We also entered the CPaaS market with the launch of our BBM Enterprise Software Development Kit, which will expand our addressable opportunity in a high growth segment."
"Looking ahead to fiscal 2018, we expect to grow at or above the overall market in our software business. We also expect to be profitable on a non-GAAP basis and to generate positive free cash flow for the full year."03-31-17 06:12 AMLike 9 -
