Default Data usage with BBM Channels

Does anyone have any idea how much data bbm channels uses and how it uses data. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is does it download channels in the background or only when I look at them. The reason I ask is that I am concerned about using a lot of data while roaming. With legacy Blackberry's this was never ever a problem but with the newer operating system it is starting to look as if I won't be able to use data while traveling unless I purchase a sim card from the country I am traveling to.... :>(

I really wish they had an option to only allow the apps you want to access data while roaming.
