    The video speaks for itself.

    I note the following:

    1. The Android device is a Nexus 4 running KitKat.
    2. The Z30 is running the 10.3 leak (.296) with the SDK OS Android Runtime.
    3. Apps chosen are apps that I use or were suggested. No cherry picking.
    4. The Nexus 4 and Z30 have "comparable" specs. Z30 is clocked a little faster. Nexus 4 had 2 more cores.
    5. KitKat on the Nexus and Jelly Bean on the Z30 may have some effect.

    My conclusions:

    1. Compatibility is now excellent. The only Apps that I have found not to run are those that rely on Google services,
    2. The SDK OS runtime has made really big strides on load times on most apps. Most load times are now comparable to native Android. Load times really lagged in the past.
    3. Some Apps still lag on load times. Hopefully there is room for improvement before 10.3 (or 10.3.1) goes gold.

This was filmed with a Bold 9900 and its bad camera. Sorry for that.

Great video. I hope Blackberry can get it down even further. That said, i always think that it is going to be a little slower, because due to QNX, blackberry 10 has more to load, pretty much on all apps.

Thanks, could you do an app performance video with in app behaviour. The thing is that we should compare similar hardware. I d like to see the z10 against the new moto E.

This is mainly about the load time not the in app performance...

I'm happy with the performance, even though there is a 1 second delay. Apps don't seem to drain as much battery or make the phone run as hot, and all those without google services that I've tried have worked.

I got a BB10 phone because I wanted the BlackBerry experience and flow. I would love to have all the apps I want available in native format, but beggars can't be choosers and am satisfied there is a good substitute. I didn't get my phone to have all the android apps, I would have got an Android device if that were the case. The performance is always improving and I am more than happy with the balance between BB10 and android apps.

Video is the first bit of text highlighted in blue in the original post. Long press the link to open the side menu. Then choose open in for your browser of choice.

They should really make every app close from the portrait bezel even in landscape to prevent the confusion.

    Other wise looks good.

I have a question though, do you think that if we add more RAM or CPU on bb10 devices we can get the same performance as the Nexus? Or it's a runtime matter ?

I think right now, they have a few things to work out with the runtime. In some apps it kind of feels a bit like an Android ROM that someone made as opposed to a polished release from someone like Samsung. Other apps are really perfect. But this is still a beta. This is the first time I would consider comparing it to a native Android experience. I think BlackBerry is close to really nailing it!

Of course, native is better but native isn't coming anytime soon. Better specs will bring better performance but remember something. The Nexus 4 is a one year old flagship phone. What we are getting with the beta is really pretty good.

The only thing keeping the Z30 from flattening a material number of native units is I/O performance. It's terrible although it has gotten better.

BlackBerry needs to stick an engineer or two on this and tell them "figure out why, with QNX which has a threaded architecture and is quite capable of slamming the NAND in this device, we're seeing this huge performance penalty in the Android player and fix it."

My "best guess" is that this is an issue with I/O size between the two environments (e.g. a 512 byte blocksize on the Android side and a 4k one on QNX) causing significant OS cache thrashing (perhaps due to an attempt by QNX to get cute with read-aheads, etc.) If so it should not be all that hard to fix.

    This is extremely encouraging.

I have a sense of where the marketing may be going here; when the new BB models are released here, they will be promoted as having a high degree of Android compatibility (with the usual caveats), and that BB10 users will not only have the most secure OS and the most efficient communications, but potentially an even bigger app ecosystem than Apple's.

I know there's the whining from people who profess to abhor "anything but native" apps, but this really is the only remotely viable way forward for BB as a device manufacturer. This new runtime looks to improve usability considerably.
