Default Source code for The Last Weather App

The Last Weather App became the number #1 weather App on BlackBerry 10 in 3 days time. To celebrate this I decided to open source the app so others can learn from it.

The app uses BlackBerry WebWorks and has some interesting features:

    • BBM connectivity
    • Dynamic image generation through HTML5 Canvas
    • Saving files on the BlackBerry 10 filesystem
    • BlackBerry Invocation framework for social sharing
    • Geolocation
    • Usage of an external API

I hope this is useful for people learning to use BlackBerry WebWorks.

You can find the source here:

    https://github.com/TheMarco/The-Last-Weather-App

Some important remarks, also in the README that comes with it:

This app is based on a concept screenshot I saw online one day. It was attributed to Tobias van Schneider. I have contacted him by email to let him know about this app and subsequently agreed with him that I will keep the app free, credit him for the original concept and don't port the app to iOS because he will launch his version on that platform himself.

While I can't stop anyone from using this code to create an iOS app (free or paid) and/or paid apps on BlackBerry® 10 or other platforms I strongly suggest that you don't. Being nice really goes a long way. If anyone wants to make a FREE port for a platform other than iOS then I suppose that's acceptable. However please DO give credit where credit's due. Especially to Tobias van Schneider.

I've decided to make this code Open Source so other BlackBerry® WebWorks developers can take a look at it and maybe learn something for their own apps.

This help me because I wanted to add BBM connectivity to my app. Thank you! Just curious, how many downloads are you at right now?

Still no openVPN support in BlackBerry 10. The only platform to not have it.

About 1200 so far. Not bad on such a new platform if you ask me.

There's a bbm specific sample Web works in my github (github.com/scrid2000) if out want to add bbm integration. It's very simple. (sorry to detract from your thread Marco).
I may need to check out your canvas to blob code.
Also, I'm not an attorney, and definitely not your attorney, but you generally don't owe anyone anything for just having an idea (as the numerous Tablet TV knockoffs in BlackBerry World attest) lol.

It now has BBM and social sharing via invoke so that's all in there

And yes, I know I could just go ahead and push this to iOS, Android and whatnot but I'm not really interested in doing that. Karma thing, I suppose. I'm in touch with the guy who came up with the idea and I figured it would be nice to let him have iOS with it. It seems he's having trouble getting it approved by Apple anyway because of the language. BlackBerry is much nicer in this respect because they simply allow you to give an app an 18+ M-rating and censor the screenshots in BB World. Much better than Apple's puritan nonsense.

Would be cool though if someone ported it to Android. My wife wants it on her Galaxy Note II

Lol, I keep meaning to look into phonegap to port my BlackBerry apps to Android. Maybe I'll mess with that this weekend.
Added your github to the list in the stickied thread. Thanks for the canvas to blob sample, helped me out yesterday

It should be easy to port the main app but of course no BBM and I'm not sure if Android has something like the BB Sharing invocation. The invocation is one of the things I absolutely love about BB10. You simply say 'share this image' and you can instantly share to any social network the user has apps for. With a mere few lines of code. Totally awesome.

It's not on PlayBook right now. I figured I may as well wait for PlayBook to get BB10. Then it will just run as is, no?

I'm not sure if I can do the social sharing thing on PlayBook. So the app would lack one of it's best features.

Just a question for TheMarco would you mind if I took the app and turned it into a more condensing sarcastic tone rather then all the cussing it has now? Dont want to seem as if I am leeching off your app but I just want something uh a little cleaner :P
