Default Regarding contract.

Hey I was wondering if I'm eligible for an upgrade does that mean im out of contract? The reason I ask im looking to leave to lack of phones to my liking. I just want to know so I can look around or just upgrade my line later on when better phones come out for AT&T.

Not necessarily. Sometimes as you are approaching the end of the contract AT&T
allows you to upgrade a little early. At the point when you do upgrade your
contract period starts over. If you don't, the current contract period stay in force.

Best bet is to call the carrier and ask.

If you pay over $100 monthly for your big three services (voice, data, messaging), you tend to be able to upgrade every 12 months. You should KNOW when your contract is up. Two years to the day, every time.

Does that pertain to the whole bill? Or each line. For example, if I have 3 lines, does only the line that pays $100 (due to the base plan, plus messaging and data) get the upgrade every 12 months, or since the bill is close to $200 every month, would it still be applicable?

I'm trying to get this whole 1 year at a time thing worked out so that when I go to sign my next contract, it's only 1 year!

Per line.

The phone line designated the primary line in a family group shoulders the burden of the shared voice plan and if you have any other shared features like Family Messaging Unlimited, that $30 charge is billed to the primary line.

So the primary line in a family group (up to five lines per group) gets to upgrade faster than the secondary lines, barring some odd situations like a smartphone user with unlimited data and a bunch of individual features.

Upgrade tiers are basically below $70, between $70 and $99, and $100 or more. Upgrade every 24, 18, or 12 months. It's more complicated than that, but in order to keep your upgrade date from shifting around, try not to downgrade, don't get suspended for not paying your bill, and don't get adjustments.

Alright, so since our main line is just under $100, we'd have to be in the 18 month section. As per we've never been late on a payment, in about 6 years have only ever upgraded one time and never downgraded (we've slowly been increasing our bill by adding things like texting and internet) and as far as I know, we've never been issued an adjustment (even the one month we went way over our minutes prompting the upgrade). So when I go to upgrade, how would I go about asking for the 18 month upgrade or contract?

Use *NEW# to see your upgrade status.

It's a rolling 3 bill period that causes changes to your upgrade status. Going from rock bottom service to unlimited everything with a cherry on top may gradually move forward your eligibility each month, based on your average amount of billed charges over the past three bills.

We upgrade to the $70 phone plan in Jan 2008. We added unlimited texting to that line sometime in that year as well. I just looked and it's a bit over $100, actually, each month and besides adding a data plan to an auxillary line about 6 months ago, the plan has remain unchanged and paid on time for atleast or exceeding (as seen in that I'm almost due for another upgrade and haven't changed anything since) 2 whole years. Do they just do that automatically? Because if so, it's never been done. My update is still in July, which is roughly 2 years after the last time I got one.

Is your line the primary line in the group? If not, then changing your voice plan will have no impact on your upgrade date or any potential bonuses.

Yeah, it is. I'm the primary line in the group. It's a $70 nationwide voice plan, $30 family text messaging, but the 2 data packages are on two of the non-primary family lines.

So I think what I'm gonna do is just call them up and tell them I heard a little rumor about that kind of stuff and ask them what they can do for me. See if that doesn't get the ball rolling.

Dial *639# and press send. You'll get a report on your upgrade eligibility. Mine kept getting pushed back because I changed to smaller and smaller features to fit my actual usage.

Alas, AT&T does not have any 50 message, 20 megabyte, 120 minute packages.

Were that the case, though, I'd be able to upgrade every eight years.
