Default New Consistent "No Service" Area

I commute by train to work, and starting last week, there is a rather long "searching for network" stretch that I go through, mostly in the evening, but sometimes in the morning as well. This is in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. If anyone can help, I can provide details as to the locations. I know it involves more than one tower, as the outage lasts for about a 5-10 mile stretch of travel, and I have used a signal location app in the past, so I know there are roughly 5 or 6 handoffs in that stretch. I tried rebooting, but it makes no difference. The worst part is that there isn't even voice service. Not even SOS. Thanks.

I've been with AT&T since Jan 2010 and I had a solid 3G signal from my home, during commute and my job area from day 1. On Saturday last week I notice I was getting only EDGE and I didn't get 3G until Sunday and even then it was sporadic 3G. On Monday I noticed the same issue and contacted AT&T. First CSR mentioned that work was done on many towers in the areas I frequent (I provided zip codes to assist in pinpointing problems) Ironically this is happening when AT&T claims to be upgrading their network.
