Default Giving blackberry to a non-data account

Hey guys, so I'm getting a new phone and thinking about just giving my blackberry 9700 to my dad. I had a data plan on it and will obviously be using my data plan still on the new phone.

My question is, if I give it to my dad will he be force to get a data plan? We're still currently under contract and I'm buying the new phone out of pocket so we're not extending our plan or making any alterations. He's currently using my super old Samsung Blackjack with no data plan. He doesn't want or require data so I'm hoping that since we're still under contract and aren't renewing anything then things can stay status quo except for the different phone.

If it makes in difference, I bought the 9700 off contract as well.

Thanks!

When he tries to activate the phone and the data plan will be automatically be added. The only way to have a BlackBerry without data is to be grandfathered into an old plan without data. Sorry.

Even if you had an exemption previously, adding a smartphone will remove it. The only way to bypass this is to use a phone that AT&T doesn't automatically recognize, like one from another carrier.

A little late to the topic, but why not just move SIM cards around?

Your father's BlackJack has a SIM, put that in the 9700 you give him.

You may or may not get a new SIM when you buy a new phone. If you do, then throw away your old SIM. If you don't use the SIM from the 9700 in whatever phone you do get.

...or doesn't that work any more? As long as everything is on AT&T, there should be no unlocking requirements.

Contract or no contract doesn't matter. As long as the device is active it will have the data plan.
