It's possible to use SOME postpaid phones on prepaid service, but the iPhones and some BlackBerry phones don't play nice. Basically, you buy a cheap GoPhone, activate it, and then.. well, I forget. I'm more familiar with using a GoPhone SIM in a regular AT&T phone (SIM has to be unlocked by customer care, but you get a one-time shot of 150 bonus minutes).
But I digress. I'd recommend calling prepaid customer care to inquire about this before buying anything. | I'll go to AT&T tomorrow, It is a crappy pantech slate, but the one with a camera.
