I found my apn setting for my phone online. It was inet.bell.ca, so i changed it then turned data "on" and immediately started receiving texts/attachments sent from different people since i got this phone. My questionis why would this type of text nothave come in when i am home using our wifi connection with data "off"? Why did i have to enable data to receive them?

    Hi !
Because SMS/MMS support isn't handled by wifi but only your carrier network.

Side note; several carriers have different APN settings for your main device (smartphone) and an auxilliary one (like tablets, not intended for phone calls). Be sure you use the proper one, as normally you shouldn't have to trick that: your SIM card is *supposed* to expose the proper setting for your smartphone (very likely, no specific setting in the APN device section).
