Win 8.1 not detecting Blackberry Q10 (OS10) device

I want to synchronise contacts between my Blackberry (Q10, with OS10) and the laptop (Win 8.1).

Laptop recognises Blackberry Curve 9300 (with OS7) from USB3 and USB2 ports.
But laptop fails to recognise Blackberry Q10 (OS10) thru both USB3 and USB2.
Old laptop (Windows XP) does recognise Blackberry Q10.
BB Link software DID recognise the BB Q10 device over wifi (but that cant synch contacts anyway).

By recognise I mean computer beeps; and McAfee antivirus scanner offers to scan the device.

Given the above it seems the phone (BB Q10), the USB ports (both 2.0 & 3.0), the USB cable, and Blackberry Link software are all ok.
JUST that Win 8.1 and BB OS10 must have some incompatibility!?

Desperate and frustrated. At this rate will have to return the new BB Q10 phone and get Android now... any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, is your BlackBerry Link updated to the most recent version, and your windows is up to date? I have a 8.1 enterprise edition 64 bit, no issue with any devices.

Thanks v much! Yes it's all updated.
* Windows 8.1 (normal, not enterprise). 64bit OS. Fully updated (as of 25Jun14).
* Blackberry Link - website says latest is Blackberry Link 1.2.3.48 (as of 8Jun14), but oddly the installation executable is called 123_b046_multilanguage.exe.

So have you successfully used a wired connection for BB Link to see the connected phone?

Well, remove your old link, run ccleaner, and reinstall the latest one available.
