I'm only interested in the talk & text functionality from Cricket Wireless. I entered the IMEI for BYOP and it said: "We can tell which SIM card type your phone uses based on your IMEI." and it was a Mini SIM.

As far as I can tell from their website they no longer support legacy BlackBerry. So only a BB10 device would work and further it would have to be unlocked.
i managed to get it working on a locked 9900 (had an issue getting it unlocked in which the issuer hasn't delivered a refund) and it can only work with a talk & text plan AFAIK. I had to go to a gamestop to find the right sized SIM card which turned out to be cheaper than buying from CW directly
You can probably get some limited data stuff via wifi
