Because Verizon devices have to be whitelisted to comply with their stupid caveman CDMA technology, same with Sprint. Even if the Shop BlackBerry Priv had CDMA support (which it doesn't) then it'd be a hassle to get it to work.

Once VoLTE and everything else over LTE happens then the distinction should go away, although if BlackBerry will still be producing devices by then is questionable.

Hey thurask ... sorry for the ignorant question ... but what happens after LTE? Are all the carriers going to be using the exact same bands and that is why there will be less hassles?

The problem as I understand it (and Thurask said) is Verizon by default blocks all device MEIDs (or whatever the term), unless whitelisted for their network. The chipsets having all needed LTE bands for all carriers will not necessarily change that. The legacy does need to be dumped (3G CDMA). If Verizon tomorrow turned off 3G CDMA, they still have to change how they authenticate phones onto their network. I think, anyway.

Don't count on this happening any time soon. I live in a rural area and have only 3G CDMA Verizon coverage in some areas. It is still widely used if you leave the "beaten path".

LTE doesn't have the whitelists of CDMA; in fact, people have had some success in using non-Verizon devices on Verizon if the LTE in their area is robust enough: http://www.androidcentral.com/being-...-android-world

Band support might be an issue with certain providers (Band 66 is new but mostly unsupported, TD-LTE is a limiting factor in phone selection in India and China, etc) but a decent enough radio chip can make world phones great again.

Interesting. So the whitelisting is solely tied to CDMA?

GSM and LTE need SIMs, while all the subscriber stuff for CDMA is the phone itself. That's why popping a Verizon LTE SIM into a phone should get it up and running (as seen in the Android Central article).

Some markets have CDMA networks with provisioned SIMs (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remo...dentity_Module), but not Sprint or Verizon.

Aaaah yes. Makes sense. Now that you say that, I remember before LTE Verizon phones didn't even need SIMs other than maybe for "world-mode" handsets to use GSM.

    Cool.
