Since the past week or so, on my Passport, every morning the hub would show an entry that was an advertisement for some BB World app. Merge contacts app, and others I can't remember.
I tried to find a way to turn that off but can't find any setting.

Most likely you have installed a "free" app of which the authors have made money by spamming advertisements.
Review the apps you have installed around the time the ads started and poke through their permissions or rethink their value.

That's usually done by applications whom you had given such permissions. Just go through your recently install apps from BlackBerry World.
