I've got an HTC One with infrared capabilities. It's a cool feature for using the device as a remote control, but I think BlackBerry focused hardware improvements in other areas of the Passport, like better camera, more RAM, faster CPU, etc.

Probably cause you can get a harmony hub. And boom your phone is a remote.

It's a matter of priorities - IR is not a highly-demanded feature. They can get far more benefit by focusing resources on implementing a faster CPU, better camera, WiFi 802.11ac, and that sort of stuff, especially since IR is slowly headed towards obsolescence thanks to things like smart TVs.

Pretty much but no one will step out and adopt Bluetooth

Most remote controls in the USA use infrared. Where are you guys from and what do they use there?

I enjoyed using the HTC One as a remote control for the tele and it's a bummer BlackBerrys don't have it, but it isn't essential enough of a feature for me to deter away from them.

IR is obsolete but they keep using it even though Bluetooth is Sooooo much better just no one wants to be the first for some reason

Canada. My remote is infrared but I also have a app on my phone that displays a guide and can be used as a remote from anywhere over wifi

Yeah my cable provider has an app that you can control the cable boxes from, IR just seems cheap and easy vs other solutions.

IR is another piece of hardware to include and most of the people don't use it anyway. At the moment it is just used for your home cinema system. So there is no reason to include it in a business device.

Bluetooth has not been widely adopted due to the additional cost. Despite the fact that both options are very cheap
