I recently switched from Bold to Z30. I had BBM data plan on Bold ( I mean only BBM and nothing else: so-called social messaging ). BBM worked OTA and Wi-Fi. I still have the same plan on Z30, but BBM works only Wi-Fi. Numerous calls to carrier ( Rogers ) didn't give anything. Only answer was: BB10 phones are not legacy devices and you need full data plan. Can anyone explain the situation? BTW I don't need any data because I have Wi-Fi at work and home, but sometimes it's nice to have BBM on the go.
    Thanks in advance.

BlackBerry 10 devices don't need BIS - social or otherwise. You can have the normal data plan depending on your need.

I know it, but why having BBM data plan I can't use it over the air on BB10 devices.

I am not aware of the technicalities of it, sorry!
Maybe difference in radios, a BlackBerry expert could shed more light on this and enlighten us.

Because BB10 does not support BIS (routing traffic through BB servers). All traffic is routed through same network like any other phone data.

That's why BIS plan does not work for you and you need normal data plan.

Just tell them you bought an iPhone and thus need a regular data plan. That should work!

BBM uses data. BlackBerry 10 doesn't support BIS.
You need to have a data plan.

Great! But that's not the topic of this thread.

BTW OP, I would use the term mobile data instead of OTA. OTA generally refers to getting updates or data without having to be plugged into your computer - which could be wifi too.

I see. So does it mean that BBM messages don't go through BB servers?

Yes you will need a regular data plan or a "full BIS" plan. That works too.

Simple answer: legacy devices went through the BlackBerry NOC (BlackBerry servers) so they could determine what data to allow (usually BlackBerry made apps ie. fb, bbm and twitter). BB10 devices not on a BES (enterprise) plan do not go through the BlackBerry NOC. So they require a regular, full data plan like iPhones and Androids.

Either get a small data plan ie. 500MB or less, to use email and bbm when not connected to Wi-Fi, or embrace mobile data and get a huge 6GB+ data plan and go nuts lol

Forgot to mention, same thing happened to my mom when she switched from a BlackBerry Curve 9360 to a BlackBerry Z10. I forgot to upgrade her plan to include regular data, and the Telus rep didn't mention anything either even though she knew what phones were involved. $50 data charge later and my mom only uses bbm at home on wi-fi lol I have to look into upgrading their plans now that the holidays are over.
