If u just peep through one or two lines in hub of your whatsapp msgs it won't show you online or not counted as your last seen, but if u open that msg from the hub,it takes u to the apps itself, so u r online or will appear last seen on that moment of time.
Hope that answers your question

It depends on what version your whatsapp is.
I use the latest version of whatsapp for BB10 OS. Here's I can say:
1. Online in whatsapp means that you are connected to the Internet.
2. Last seen is when the last time you're connected to the Internet.
(means both depend on your internet connection)
3. One check mark means that the message is sent to the server.
4. Two check mark means the message is delivered to the recipient.
5. Two check mark with blue color means the message is already read by the recipient.
So, the point is the recipient know or not you are online it depends on the Internet. Definitely the recipient knows whether you already read the message or not by the check mark. But you can turn off this feature.
In my case if I only peek message from the hub without tap on it (open). Then the mark in sender's phone is only two check mark (white check mark) means "I haven't read it yet ".

Yes if opened via the hub, you will be online
However these following will not alter your last seen, trigger the blue checkmark or show you as online:
- looking at the lines that are shown with the notification in the hub
-looking at the whole message on the lock screen
-tapping the reply button and reading/replying from the instant preview
