It means your device is in some sort of quiet/ alarms only mode

Thanks, I accidentally swiped "priority" mode on volume and poof, on came the star icon.

I don't quite recall the name on Lollipop, on Marshmallow it's now "Do Not Disturb". Tapping that will silence all notifications until you shut it off, you can also set it to allow only the notifications you want for the time it's on, in addition you can set it up with a schedule or turn it on and set a time for it to shut itself off.

For those that have used BlackBerry for years, this is analogous to Bedside Mode. :yes:
