Can you tell me what the difference is between a security wipe on the phone or plugging into a computer /bblink and doing a factory reset?

Essentially the same. Both completely wipe device.
If at all possible do it through BlackBerry Link on your PC.. typically far fewer problems and quicker.

As far as I can tell the difference is that the factory reset is a reload of the factory image (i.e. the same as an autoloader) while the security wipe is a specific cleanout of sections of memory, probably according to some government standard (FIPS140-2, I guess?). This is why the security wipe takes longer.

And here I thought the security wipe was pretty much only there for people who had no immediate access to a PC to use BlackBerry Link. I stand corrected maybe. Regardless, I have seen the security wipe fail too many times to be of much use for me. Of all the times I have tried it, I have only succeeded once on my z10, even though I remove apps, SD cards etc etc. Thanks for the info/theory Thurask.

What we got here is failure to communicate....
