I always thought data and text were the same thing. you use data to write text right? So why are their separate charges?

Data can mean many different things depending on the context. Your phone probably uses GSM or CDMA protocol to make voice calls and to send SMS (raw text) messages. This is what you can do with a Talk and Text plan from your carrier.

If you want to attach pictures or video to your "text" messages or if you want to browser the internet when you are not connected to Wi-Fi, you need a Date Plan which uses protocols like LTE. In this case, you text messages can use the MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) protocol.

One way to communicate with text, pictures, and video without a Data Plan is to use an app like WhatsApp which works over Wi-Fi.
