Hello, I received the following message when attempting to search for software updates;

Unable to connect to the update server. Please check your connection settings or try again later.

This is the second time i have received this prompt, is there something I may be missing? A feature I might need enabled? I have not had any problems with this before.

You're not missing anything nor any feature. Just make sure your internet connection doesn't suck, maybe try it on WiFi. Worst case, reboot, try again.
