    I might have to send my old one to a friend in India, so I wonder if it would work better/worse than the ATT/Tmobile types. Thanks,

    The cellular radio frequencies are different. The 9900 is for GSM networks (like AT&T and T-Mobile) and the 9930 is for CDMA networks (like Verizon and Sprint), although it does have 2G GSM frequencies.

    So a Bold 9930 might work on a GSM network on 2G in India, but it will be painfully slow. It wouldn't be worth it unless all you wanted to do was text and call.
