What OS and device are you running? I have an STL100-4 running 10.3.1.1151 and it works fine - I was able to create a video using Story maker of the pictures of my kids and included music. At first I used the default music, but then switched it over to one of the songs on my SD card.
I find that you can edit the story either from within "Videos" or from "Story maker" - hit the overflow button (3 dots) and select "change music"
See if that works for you , but it does depend on what device and OS you have/running.

I did that it used to work I changed songs just to see if it was the audio file and none of them worked
