Never, never let it get to a dead state. The fewer times it gets below 20%, the better life your battery will have.

Every tech site advise against letting a phone die, you should always charge it before it reaches a too low percentage (like 5-10%). Not that, anyway, you're going to damage - read: degrade the performances of - your battery (unless you do it on a daily basis). Besides, after three years, if you intend to continue using your device for at least another year, buying a new battery could be a good idea (especially if you can find one for a cheap price), because you'll regain a phone which lasts way more than now.

Dodge letting your battery fully drain. After three years you may consider a new battery regardless .

No, that is carry-over advice from older technology batteries.

For the Lithium Ion cells in your phone, keep them about half-charged whenever possible for longest calendar life. Normal daily cycles of 100% to 10% and back up again are fine, but if they are not going to be used for awhile, store them at about 50% in a cool, dry place.

With a 3 year old battery, you should expect its storage capacity to show degradation soon, so obtaining a spare is good advice.

Most modern smartphone battery has failsafes to prevent deep discharge... but if you want to be safe, never let the phone totally discharge! it will permanently damage your battery
