When using the Priv, do you need to have a Google account? Do you have to use Google Mail?

You can set device up without Google account but it will have limited functionality. E.g. Google account needed for Google services including Play Store. Google mail is not mandatory.

Having a google account makes things much better too. I love cloud backup of my photos with Photos app, unlimited storage too.
You need it for PlayStore etc, so yes you pretty much have to have it. You can setup a google account without mail though for example, [email protected] can still be your google account.

As others stated, you'll need a Google account to access the Play Store. While you can use the device without an account, you won't be able to update the native BlackBerry apps for example - which is done via Play Store.

Having said that, there is no need to use your account at all. I don't use it for any mails, I have disabled GMail as well as all Google Docs apps and stuff like photos etc.
