Can someone please explain to me how I can get my BBM to see the external contacts that are not part of my BBM list?
I see none there.
How does this feature work? Does it scan my contacts and checks who has BBM installed?
It's driving me nuttsss!!

So now that BBM has rolled out this update to everyone, I should be seeing my other contacts. However, I don't!
Does this mean that no one on my contacts has BBM installed?
Or they used a different email address for their BBM accounts from those you have saved as their adresses in your contacts app.
I see a few when scrolling down on the contacts tab. First connected BBM contacts, then "contacts". Those don't have profile photos. BBM recognises these contacts as BBM users according to the email address.
Finally there is the blue invite others entry from which one can send invites to non-BBM users.
Hi, you should have BBM contacts and then underneath is a contacts section that contains people who are not in your bbm contact list but still have a pin (either they have a BlackBerry or they have BBM installed).
See the pic. If you don't have that section, then none of your contacts have a pin.

Yes I don't have any under contacts. The right question to ask is, how does BBM detect other contacts? Is it through the email address within their contact card or how??
Exactly. If the email address stored is a valid BBID email address then you get the option to BBM straight.

This is really useless then. Unless I add their email address in the Contacts app, nothing will show up. I thought it just detects based on your list of contacts.
Does BlackBerry know which BBID email addresses are active? For example, many of us have upgraded our phones and registered the new device with a different BBID email address thus leaving the original BBID as dormant.
Doubt it. There's not even a check if a BBID is solely used for a PlayBook. I have two contacts who do so and who are now shown as 'contacts'. It is possible to start a chat with them in BBM , but that doesn't give any form of notification to them; neither in BBM (since there is none on PlayBook) nor via email or any other way.
I totally agree with you. That is why I keep saying that using phone number to discover this is many times more efficient than using an email address.
The reason is I have 4 different email addresses so only a quarter of my contacts will be able to find me. Out of these quarter only a small fraction uses BBM so very few will see me.
I would say 100% of my contacts have my phone number so the possibility of them finding me is much higher. Don't you think so?
There is a group of BBM users who will just shirk at the notion of using phone number because they don't understand it. They're afraid that by using phone number people whom they don't know will get their phone numbers but this is NOT the case coz if they are added to a group chat with people they don't know, these people will also not see our phone numbers just our PIN.

Well, that's part of the reason. The other is that people lend each other phones, and carriers recycle numbers.
So it can end up just like the email thing, but instead of messages going nowhere, they might end up in the wrong hands.
Work Wide and Prosper
I don't think so because the phone number is just used to discover your contacts. @BBM will ultimately be using a PIN or BlackBerry ID like how it is now. So messages will still be sent to the correct person.

Just to confirm:
1. BBM cannot add contact by phone number?
2. BBM add contact by email?
That's sad.. I was happy when I read about "No invitation required" and now i feel disappointed.
So I guess back to my Whatsapp which is much clever than BBM.

Privacy over visibility is all BBM stands for.

I totally agree with you coz adding people but email is purely stupid coz it just doesn't work.
I've also tried adding people via SMS, it also doesn't seem.
The only way you can add someone on BBM is that they are in front of you giving you their PIN which is really Stupid.

I totally agree with you. I have 4 emails addresses but only use one of them for my BBID. So in my case only 1/4 of my contacts will have a chance to get in touch with me.
If only 1/4 of these contacts save my email to their phones then it would be 1/16 of my contacts. Have a chance to get in touch with me.
To be extremely bullish, perhaps 1/4 of these contacts uses BBM then the probability of my contacts getting in touch with me is approximately 1.562%
What stupid method is this?
