Ask him to delete the phone from his list of Blackberry protected (from the website using a PC/Mac), and then wipe the device, so you can insert your own BBID. Or, do not wipe and directly autoloader the device. Either way is good, as long as the BB protect from the previous owner has been lifted.

I don't think that's a good idea. Clearly up to you, but if you have any problems, your phone will be a brick and you won't be able to recover it.

For the amount of effort required to change your friend's BBID you can simply do as suggested and login to his account, remove device from his Protect account, wipe device and start fresh with your own Bbid.

As indicated it will save you from plenty of grief in the long run.
