after I used an app, i deleted it if it overheated but that did not help. Does anyone have an answer. I cannot tell if something is running in the background. Also, this kills the battery in about 3 hours.

Go to device monitor and select battery, it should give you a clue to what apps may be causing this. Repeat this for CPU too.
Failing that, I'd backup the phone and do a wipe and restore.

Another test you should try before wiping is, run Blackberry Virtual Expert, run all tests and see if that reveals anything.
