Is it possible to use the device without signing into google? Any downsides?

Nope. It's an ANDROID, so what do you think it'd need for proper use?
You might be able not signing in, but I don't think it would be an experience worth having.
Except, of course, if you go through the BB10 route. You can definitely go without signing to google.

Thx, for your reply. I think that I am typing from an android phone without any google services installed and that the experience is not that bad ;-)
What I wanted to know is, if the BB-app suite is updated via playstore - which seems to be the case.
