Tap Settings > Network and Connections > Mobile network > Network Mode (choose one of the options in the drop down menu)

But be aware that 3G does not necessary save data... the amount of data is always the same... the data flow is only slower.

I experienced a better battery power economy by turning the mobile data off and keeping only GSM/Phone mode. Then I gather my data (say incoming emails/social network) once every 2-3h (I use the midday lunch break and about 16:00 coffee break) and once and for all, then I turn off data again. The phone stays functional, sms working, but no emails, no what's app (I don't use BBM).

As a valuable information : I noticed better productivity this way, coz I am not distracted by the incoming what's app messages and the emails that are not important. The important emails are flagged to my task list and I move on.

    Cheers
