by default, BB10 OS is equipped with automatic display dim/brightness level using the terminology called "Garber Light Optimisation" (GLO). You can find the definition of GLO over here. in short, the ambient light sensor along with the device screen continuously tries to produce the best possible brightness all over way.

Is there any way to disable the auto-dimming feature? My phone screen cracked and pieces of glass keep chipping away so I put tape over the top of my screen. This blocks the ambient light sensor and so when I'm outside my phone is super dim, because the sensor is blocked.

If you blocked the sensor then you may need to adjust the display brightness yourself.

Via the quick menu you can get to the display setting quickly.

Maybe you need to unblocked your sensor first then go outside and cover the sensor again. Go inside to check if it is not too dark.

Can't you make a hole around the sensor so it can work properly?
