You'll have to set the sync option when you configure the Gmail account. You could simply click add email in the accounts, go through the process of adding the account and select contact & calendar sync in the final step.

Have you thought about creating a second GMail account and setting it up as suggested above? Once both are on the phone, you should be able to copy over your contacts to the new account and then delete the old. Just a thought.

This is the setup screen.
If you want to sync your contacts you will have to select the first option. If you just want the mail you press the settings kind of symbol in the bottom bar. Hope this helps.
