no reason for most contacts to be lost but they are I can not restore from backup using blackberry link because it keeps asking for my device password which apparently is not the password I use daily to access or use my cell How do I retrieve my password?

Actually if you know your bbid and you have set up protect on your device go to BlackBerry Protect web site , log in using your bbid password and change device password from there
