I purchased a classic on ebay and the seller said he don't know the original carrier of this phone.
So, I search the IMEI on the Internet, but still can't find out the carrier of the phone.

Some ebay sellers claim that they can find out the carrier by IMEI. Should I trust them?

Already sketchy for the seller to claim ignorance on who the carrier is.

Hello, Thank you for the question. I would say, the seller is just being difficult but we don't need them .

Open Settings > Security & Privacy > SIM card. Scroll to the bottom and see what it says. That might give you some assistance?

Looks like it is unlocked. If there is not a verizon or sprint logo on the device, it will likely take any GSM sim (att, tmobile, etc).

You can also try dragging down from the top and settings. Is there an "about phone" ? That might give some more clues.

    No. It IS locked.

If it were unlocked, there would be three fields that all say "Unlocked" - Network, Network Subset and Service Provider.

What we see here is that while the Network Subset is unlocked, the main Network is locked. That's why there is a big ol' grey button there that says "Unlock Network". That's the button you click to enter the unlock codes.

I have a locked AT&T Z10 and it says that both the Network Subset and Service Provider are unlocked, but not the Network itself.

Back to the OPs question, unless there's a logo somewhere on the phone, it would be very hard to find out where a phone was originally purchased from. However, a reboot will sometimes display the carrier of the last SIM that was installed in it. Not always a reliable source of information, but it may work.

Oh, and the "About" page doesn't tell you anything about where a phone is locked to. It will only give you the current SIM information. If there isn't one in it, it probably will just tell you no SIM installed.

I've never seen those IMEI checkers actually give you the carrier info. Just basic info on the phone itself.

Go to Hub>settings>text messages>advanced and scroll down to apn settings. There's usually a clue there.

It doesn't show any carrier when your phone is restarting?

The APN is only filled in once you have an activated SIM. If there's no SIM, there's no APN to show.

I mentioned the boot-up carrier splash screen earlier. That's not reliable in a BB10 phone. On the legacy BlackBerry phones, the splash screen graphic was hard coded in the carrier-bound phones. Even if it was unlocked and another carrier SIM successfully running, it would still splash the carrier it was originally locked to. But with BB10, it only splashes the carrier of whatever that last activated SIM was for. If the OPs Classic was previously unlocked and used on another carrier afterwards, it may only show that last carrier graphic until the next SIM is installed and activated on that phone.

Smells like it is a stolen device. Especially where the seller wouldn't tell you what carrier they had it on. At that point the proper plan would have been to walk away.
