    Ensure that the proximity sensor (just to the left of the BlackBerry logo) is being covered by a part of your face. That is what's needed to turn the screen off while talking on the phone.

    If that doesn't work for you, you can minimize the phone app, go to the homescreen and then turn the screen off and that should prevent it from turning on and causing you to hit buttons.

    The sensor is still active even then. Best thing is minimize the phone app and lock the screen as mentioned above.
