I have a old Blackberry 9650 from Verizon that i stopped using a couple of years ago when I switched to an AT&T iphone. I'm spending 3 weeks in Australia; can I have this Blackberry unlocked and replace the SIM card with an Australian one for local use while I am there?

Yes, so long as it's unlocked you're good to go.
