Although my BB Classic is not linked to a BB corporate server and was sold to me by a national carrier, it says by default under Device Password "IT policy requires device password to be set" (System Settings; Security and Privacy; Device Password).

How do I override the IT Policy, that comes form nowhere?

For future reference, always provide a screen shot. This helps people help you

It sound like from what you are describing, You carrier have made adjustments to you OS to ensure you have a Passport for your device. Either speak to your carrier and ask if it can be lifted OR take matters into your own hands, download a Auto-Loader and you will over-ride the carrier setting.

I can't help with Auto-Loaders but I'm sure many here will be able to help with it.

An autoloader won't erase the password. Take it to where you got it or call them and ask if they have a password. It sounds like you got a refurbished phone that had BES on it at some point. Get them to replace it if that's the case. If it is refurbished Sachesi will tell you, once you've gained access.

Try this if you haven't already gotten it fixed.

If nothing works the best solution is to put the lock device after 1 hour and use a simple password like 0000
