If you wipe your device with encrypted memory card, your memory card will be inaccessible. You can't use the memory card anymore.

Yes, this would interest me too.
What exactly is device encryption. Does it affects the phone performance? What do we gain and what do we loose be doing it.

If you encrypt the data on your phone it will have a slight performance hit. But if your phone was forensically analysed, your data would be almost impossible to extract. Assuming your device is already password protected, device encryption is only for the ultra-secure, top secret folks.
Likewise your SD card. This makes more sense to me however. If someone stole your card, they wouldn't be able to read it. The risk, as stated above, is that if something happens to your device (damaged, security wiped), then you too will not be able to read your card.

Just remember -- with the SD card -- you must un-encrypt using the original phone in its exact state when you created the encryption. Having the correct password will not matter if you have changed the phone. So, if you want to upgrade your OS, remove encryption first.
Only if you're doing autoloaders or a wipe then install. OTA updates and Sachesi Blitz files will keep the core encryption keys intact.
Encryption is like second protection after password protection. Your device will be more secure.
