I just got my new Q10 in the mail, called sprint to activate and it wouldn't show any other message besides "No SIM recognized" and emergency only calls only, do I need a SIM card to activate it? Thanks

You only need a SIM for voice / text services. ...other than that, Wi-Fi to your hearts content.

so to use it as a daily driver, I will need a SIM? My 9850 was just activated over the air. And what about data? Any thing I need there?

To use Text Messages & Voice Calls, you will need a Mirco Sim 64k or 128k. (For LTE / 4G)
You can purchase one from your local carrier, some are free some cost about $2 - 3

If you are going to stay on Wi-Fi, you don't need one unless you are doing the above mentioned. BBM will work on Wi-Fi with no Sim Card.

With Regards to data, you will have to ask you ISP about that. Prices vary from carrier to carrier and usage varies from person to person. Ig you take me for example, on my Mobile Data i use about 10mb per month. So thats costs around $0.80 per month. I use about 3GB data on Wi-Fi which is around $0.00 per month :P

The Q10 is an LTE device so you will need a SIM for the LTE bands and to provision it to Sprint's network.

You can pick up the SIM from Sprint if it didn't come with one, and you will continue to get the nag message. The SIM is used for LTE and international roaming.

No it does not require it. You can use it as a wifi-only device.

Do Sprint LTE phones require a SIM card even if you don't plan on using LTE? IOW, can you use a LTE-capable as an older, CDMA-only phone with no SIM in it?

Yes you can just set it on 3G only and it will only use CDMA

But do you still have to set such a phone up with a SIM card? Can you, for example, go into Network Settings and set Network Mode to CDMA only and then activate the phone with Sprint?

The SIM in an LTE enabled CDMA device works just like a SIM in a GSM device: it stores the phone number and gives the device its network access. Without a SIM, the device has no phone number. Just go to any Sprint store and ask for an LTE SIM and start enjoying the phone!

The 3G side of the phone is CDMA which does not use the SIM card, it uses the ESN number to affliliate with the network, the SIM card is for LTE and International use, you can put it on 3G from the settings and get provisioned and all. Sprint does not charge for SIM cards and you can pick it up from any Sprint store and they will get it set up in your account. Doesn't cost a thing.

Do you know if I get the SIM from Sprint if it will bind me in a contract with them? I presently do not have one, been a customer a very long time.

Nope, you can go contract free. Have a special on BYOD where they will send you a sim kit.

To add to what @kg4icg said, make sure the Q10 you're bringing to Sprint is the SQN100-4. No other Q10 will work.
