Is at&t supported phones better than others and why? What efects on price of smartphones?

Depends on what device you're buying and what you plan on doing with it.

Well, 'better' is very subjective.
Take the Passport for example, the AT&T version is the only version that has wireless charging. It also has all rounded corners.

It all depends on the particular model you're looking at and is the carrier's version got additional features as part of the device.

And Price can vary. You can get the AT&T version of the Priv for $350 now on Ebay. There is a delay with system updates, so many avoid that version.

Many just avoid the AT&T version even though it's cheaper since it hasn't received the OS update yet.

Unless you use the AT&T network and therefore care about their IMS-centric offerings, I would not recommend getting the AT&T Priv. Their (AT&T's) update approval is just too slow.
