I had my 9790 Bold stolen, so I have neither the handset nor the SIM, but (I thought) luckily I backed up to BB Desktop, so extracting my contacts to set up my new Z30 would be a possibility. It seems this may not be the case.
Does anyone know how I can copy contacts in BB Desktop to my new Z30, please ?

Let me guess, you did NOT have them synced with say Gmail or Yahoo right?

Yep - you are 100% correct. I thought the Desktop was enough

Unfortunately, I don't think you can.
You can only restore to BB10 from BBOS using an SD card or Device switch.
And you don't have any of those as the phone got stolen. Sorry.
However, if you can go through this process i want to tell you, you will have your contacts and other things backed-up back. Here:
    1. Look for a similar phone that was stolen, not necessarily the exact but one that is running the same OS(you can get your friend to borrow you)
    2. Back-up the data on that phone using the desktop manager
    3. Restore your own back-up to the phone.
    4. Download Blackberry Link and use the switching device option to transfer your stuff from it to the z30.
    5. Once done, restore the original back-up of the borrowed phone back.
If you can do option 4, use the device switch option on that phone to back-up on an SD card and then put the card in your z30 and restore it there.(details of this on blackberry website)
You can also use device switch app to do this.

If I was in your shoes, this is what I would do.
