I know bb10 can run .apk. But is there any benefit of converting the .apk to a .bar? Will my phone respond better(load apps faster) with the .bar file? Or am I wasting time trying to convert the files?

No reason to do it. That's essentially what the phone is doing when you install the apk

For the developer, re-packing can have it's benefits. For the Android app to use platform services such as in-app purchasing ex. - it must be re-packed into BAR file.

but since you ask here, I assume you are not a developer - and as a regular use, there would not be any benefit to do that

Sliding a tad off topic, but isn't it running as an apk in android runtime?

OP, all you are doing is adding effort. May I suggest installing Snap and/or Amazon, and grabbing your apps from there?

I'm having trouble figuring out if the files have actually been converted or not... My understanding has always been that the device now converts and signs the apks itself though

Yes there is if you want to prevent that nav bar all Android apps display at the bottom. Yes I know you can hide it with a swipe from the top, but as a developer you can permanently hide it if your app has it's own navigation menus.

Great.. I say let's just load the same app (one .apk and one .bar) and see which one preforms better. I wasn't trying to get too technical with it.. But thanks for the feedback
