I was told I must get 4G and not 3G for performance reasons. Then I was told the BB Classic and Passport are only 3G. Is this true?

It depends on where you are. For most of the world, yes--4G (if you mean 'LTE.') For some places--including notable exceptions like India and China--no 4G LTE.

Also for the Classic, you would have to get the right model for your carrier/country/part of the world. For instance, the "European" model of the Classic will not get 4G LTE in the US.

Funnily, BlackBerry's own site is listing the Passport, Z10 and Z30 as 3G only on the device comparison page here:

They just love shooting themselves in the foot, don't they?

Not necessarily--if when you say '4G' you mean LTE. The phone has to have:
    A) LTE bands in it, and
    B) LTE bands relevant to your carrier.

For example, let's look at a US carrier called AT&T, and the STL100-1 Z10 and SQN100-3 Q10--both of which will get 3G on AT&T. The Z10 -1 won't get LTE on AT&T because it fails condition A. The Q10 -3 won't get LTE on AT&T either because it fails B: AT&T's LTE bands are not present in this Q10. But take the Q10 -3 to Europe, you'll get LTE just fine.
